Carcel was founded by Veronica D’Souza in 2016 who teamed up with designer Louise van Hauen. They have a talented and ambitious team in their design studios in Copenhagen and Peru, and they work closely together with their partners and producers in the countries they operate in. The first collection was made from 100% Baby Alpaca and produced in Cusco’s women’s prison in Peru. The next collection will be made from 100% silk, manufactured by women in prisons in Thailand. The brand goes where the finest local materials meet the highest rate of poverty related crime, in order to provide better jobs, new skills and opportunities for women in prison. By creating beautiful and sustainable clothing, they give them dignity.
MADE IN PERU AND THAILAND
BASED IN DENMARK AND SHIPPING: INTERNATIONAL
Made in women’s prisons in Peru (first colection) and Thiland (second collection). They are hands on with every step in the production process. They pay their salaries directly and develop country-specific payment schemes that best fit conditions at hand in order to ensure that each woman in their production earns at least the local living wage.
They use 100% natural, biodegradeable and localy sourced materials, native to the country of production. In Peru they source baby alpaca and in Thailand they source silk.
They employs incarcated women from Peru for the first collection and Thailand for the second. With new skills and fair wages they can learn to support themselves, send their children to school, save up for a crime-free future and ultimately, break the cycle of poverty.
